Science and Technology Week 2024

From 18 to 24th November, the DYNABrain team members Bárbara Canijo and Tiffany Pinho joined several activities in the context of Science and Technology Week, visiting the primary schools of Alvaiázere and Areeiro, in Coimbra.

European Researcher's Night 2024

On September 27th, 2024, the DYNABrain team joined the European Researchers’ Night, in Baixa de Coimbra, with different activities about “The social brain” for children and adults. Activities included Brain Escape Box, visualization of brain slices with a LEGO-scope, and so much more!

European Researcher's Night 2023

On September 29th, 2023, the DYNABrain team joined the European Researchers’ Night, in Coimbra, with different activities for children and adults including a Brain Escape Room, a LEGO-scope, and many more!

The Brain Maze

On February 20th, 2024, Bárbara Canijo, together with fellow CNC researcher Tiago Reis, participated in the event “Meet the Scientists” at UC-Exploratório in Coimbra where, through games and drawings, they helped children aged 3 to 5 to explore the five senses and their emotions.

The Brain: regions and functions

On May 18th, 2023, Bárbara Canijo, together with fellow CNC researcher Carolina Lebre, led an activity at Rómulo Centro de Ciência Viva – Coimbra, to explain the different brain regions and functions to primary school children by using a memory game.

International Day for Women and Girls in Science

On May 10th, 2023, Cristina Márquez celebrated the International Day for Woman and Girls in Science with activities for children and teenagers at the Instituto Espanhol de Lisboa “Giner de los Rios”.

What would you like to know about the brain?

With NeuroCurios@ project, we aim to answer children’s questions about the brain by creating an engaging, illustrated book that responds to their curiosity. As part of this initiative, we posed this open question to a group of 10-year-olds from Marquês de Marialva Middle School in Cantanhede. In collaboration with CNC’s SciComm team members Sara Amaral and Rita Félix, DYNABrain led three interactive sessions to collect the children’s questions, which will be thoughtfully adapted and transformed into illustrations for the upcoming book.

The first session was held on March 20, 2024, as part of Brain Awareness Week, where the mysteries of the brain were introduced to the children.

The second session took place at Marquês de Marialva Middle School in Cantanhede, were the children started to ask some questions to the team “How are our brains formed? Why do we feel pain, cold or hot? Does the brain change its size when we grow up?”. It led to great discussions and was the perfect launch for the next steps!

The third session happened at UC-Biotech on June 5, 20204, where the enthusiastic kids of Marquês de Marialva Middle School kept questioning and learning (almost) everything there is to know about the brain. This session was filled with hands-on activities and exciting challenges!

On the celebration of 2024 Laboratory Animal Day, Cristina Márquez was interviewed by the University of Coimbra about the importance of animal experimentation for scientific research: “Not a long time ago, we lived during a situation that has shown that, although basic research is important, animal experimentation is still of the utmost importance”. All scientific research “must be communicated to society, especially the one that involves the use of animals”, explains Cristina acknowledging the uprise of movements against animal experimentation.
